Аннотация: The book deals with the problem of linguocultural potential of allusive names, that is the names of real people, historiacl events, or literary characters which conjure up some extra meaning, embodying some quality or characteristic which have become important in the course of history of the people of particular culture. Allusive names dealt with in the book were taken from different literary texts by prominent English-speaking authors. The majority of allusions derive from classical mythology and the Bible. Other sources include folklore and legend, Shakespeare, Dickens. A prominent source of allusions is constitued by the creations of famous artists like Rembrandt and others. Ther are also allusions referring to children's stories and the contemporary media of cinema, television and cartoons. The book contains eight parts, including such topics as "Ugliness", "Love. Passion. Marriage. Infidelity", "Hard Job. Suffering", "Cruelty", "Beauty of people and scenery", "Nobility. Dignity. Courage", "Youth. Loveliness. High Spirits" and "Betrayal". The book may be interesting for Philology students, Professors and all those who are interested in English culture.
