Civility and the Quest for a New Nigeria. The Relevance of Inner Culture in the Search for a New Nigeria

      Аннотация: Today, Nigeria is plagued with, and threatened by so many social, political, economic, and moral problems. This situation is so serious that identifying an appropriate pathway along which to steer the ship of the Nigerian state has remained a major pre-occupation of many administrations that have come on board in Nigeria. What exactly is the cause of this problem? On this, opinions are rife. For example, while some argue that it is the absence of a suitable political ideology, others feel it is the lack of good economic policies. There are yet those who feel that we have always had good political ideologies, in the midst of fantastic economic policies, but that our challenge consists in the absence of the political will to implement these fantastic policies and ideologies. For yet another group,our problem consists in the fact that the system we run encourages corruption, and so on. In this work, however, it is argued that beyond any of the causes identified by others, it is the lack of civility on the part of many Nigerians that is largely responsible for our problem; and as a logical follow up to that, that to get out of the predicament, we need to cultivate the ideal of civility
