Antique enigmas of the Black Sea.

      Аннотация: The author explores some debatable themes belonging to the oldest history, numismatics and geography of the ancient Greek cities that were on the Northern Black Sea coast (Cimmerian Bosporus or Bosporan Kingdom, now district of the Kerch Strait), and he presents a new point of view to an enigmatic expedition of Pericles (a great politician of Athens of the fifth century BC) into the Black Sea, and the famous Athenian Monetary Decree of 5 BC (IG. Ii. 1453). In addition the author first published a few unique coins of Panticapaeum and Phanagoria of early time and many other Bosporan coins by private collections; he offers a new attribution of the two un-epigraphic Bosporan coinages – with images of a lion’s head full-face and a lion’s head profile – and gives own interpretation and dating of the Bosporan coinages with riddle inscriptions АПО?, ?????, ??????? and ??????. This book is for historians, numismatists and a wide range of readers interested in the problems of ancient history and numismatics of the Black Sea area.
