Аннотация: MicroSim Inhospital, a computer-based self-directed learning program, & high fidelity human patient simulation (HFHPS) are two widely used simulations in nursing education with different technology design natures. The study’s purpose is to provide evidence-based exploration of learning experience in using these two simulations and comparison of their learning outcomes in terms of students’ approaches to learning and academic performance. A two-group comparative experimental study was adopted with 88 2nd year nursing students randomly assigned to either simulation. Quantitative and qualitative data were obtained. There are three major findings: (1)Both allowed positive learning experiences, the first study to show HFHPS is more effective for academic performance and facilitating deep approach to learning. (2)HFHPS’ social element might be why students change to deep approach. (3)Evidence from reflective journals revealed HFHPS’ real clinical setting and tools allowed hands-on practice of technical skills, while MicroSim Inhospital’s user-friendliness motivated learning. A well-structured learning environment would enhance learning outcomes. A mixed use of simulations is recommended.
