Аннотация: Environmental pollution is one of the greatest problems confronting Nigeria as a nation. It has had a lot of negative effects and has led to degradation of the environment. The Niger Delta is a typical example of a region that has been plagued by environmental pollution in Nigeria. The region is highly endowed with natural resources (oil and gas). The exploration and exploitation for oil carried out largely by oil companies operating in the region have resulted in oil spills, blow-outs, gas flaring, to mention a few. As a result, the land and waters are polluted, making it difficult for farmers and fishermen to earn a living. Also, inhabitants of the region are at the risk of contacting diseases such as cancer, cholera and infertility. Again, life expectancy in the region is relatively low. Against this backdrop, the author, in this research work examines the extent, causes and effects of environmental pollution in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria and proffers practicable solutions to the problem.
