Аннотация: This book is dedicated to reflecting upon the Native Canadian worldview, the atrocities inflicted by the residential school system on some First Nations’ people and their quest for identity in mainstream Canada. All that has been done bearing in mind Highway’s novel, Kiss of the Fur Queen, because this Cree novelist, playwright, producer, director, pianist, professor and social worker skilfully portrays, in his book, native life and how traditional values interact and are juxtaposed with those of modern Canada. What is more, Highway, in a semi- autobiographical account, accurately informs his readers that the assimilation policies of the government and churches have resulted in psychological, physical, spiritual and sexual abuse to the main characters of his novel, Jeremiah and Gabriel Okimasis. This book concludes by emphasising the role of education, in general, and literature, in particular, as vehicles of freedom, the tools that give VOICE to the so far VOICELESS peoples and that ensure a better quality of life today and for future generations, both native and non-native.
