Multilingualism in Warri, Nigeria:Socio-Psychological Perspectives.

      Аннотация: The few existing works on multilingualism in Nigeria have, so far, been studied from the sociological perspective. Studies investigating the socio-psychological aspects of the phenomenon are almost non-existent. This book investigates the dynamics of multilingualism and language choice patterns in Warri from the socio-psychological perspective, to unravel the factors guiding the choice made by speakers out of the linguistic codes available in the Warri setting, namely, Isekiri, Izon, Urhobo, Nigerian Pidgin (NP) and English. Deploying the Accommodation theory as propounded by Howard Giles, it affirms that Accommodation is an important fact in the choice of any language in a multilingual setting. Having explained why NP has become the most pragmatically dominant language in the Warri area, the book asserts that since the need to adjust to NP is stronger than the desire to maintain ethnic language(s) in Warri, sociolinguistic factors should guide the formulation of language planning policies while steps should be taken to preserve the indigenous languages of the area to forestall imminent death as they are already atrophied.
