Economic Analysis of Groundnut Based Cropping System among Farmers.

      Аннотация: Groundnut is the 13th most important food crop of the world and the 4th most important source of edible oil. In west Africa, Nigeria produces 41% of the total output. The production of unshelled nuts is estimated at 2.5 million metric tons annually and yield range of 500-3000kg/ha. Despite effort by the government to revamp the production of this crop through funding of researches, crop improvement practices and vast resources of land; has not yielded significant result. In this book, two groundnut cropping systems were identified:groundnut/sorghum and sole groundnut. Analysis of cost and returns showed that both cropping system were profitable. Result of the stochastic frontier production function analysis shows that sigma squared and gamma for technical efficiency were 0.522 and 0.841respectively and were both significant at 1% level. Farm size, hired labour,family labour and herbicides were positive and had a direct relationship with output. Formal Education, primary occupation and household size increased technical efficiency of farmers. Mean technical efficiency was 74%.
