Аннотация: Cancer is an illness that is becoming increasingly common in today’s day and age with 13,028,000 Americans as of the 1st of January 2010 diagnosed with the disease. [SEER Cancer Statistics Review (CSR), 2013] Hence, researching new and improved methods, treatments and developing new drugs is essential in order to combat the disease and control it. Cancer cells have the capacity to self renew and produce progeny that are phenotypically heterogeneous and constantly proliferate. Chemotherapy aims to eliminate neoplastic cells by targeting the fast growing progeny by inducing cytostatic effects. The use of combinations of drugs prevents the proliferation of mutated cells, however, this is leading to the emergence of multi drug resistance, a phenomenon by which cancer cells are developing a resistance to a wide variety of chemotherapeutic drugs caused by a number of intracellular factors. The main aspect of the study was to compare population-doubling times in eight different cell lines, including two cell lines that were resistant to the chemotherapeutic drugs nitrogen mustard and cisplatin. Three experiments were conducted and the number of cells was counted over a 5-day period.
