Fundamentals of Applied Geology. Competency and Evaluation Approach

      Аннотация: This book on Fundamentals of Applied Geology maps geoscientific and engineering principles onto practice in the mining industry with emphasis on exploration and exploitation of natural resources, construction of infrastructure and geodisaster scenarios of historical significance together with disaster preparedness that should be addressed. Background geological knowledge is provided in chapters on mineralogy, petrology for igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, structural geology and geological maps. Application of the background knowledge learned is then captured in the chapters on geotectonic setting of rocks in Kenya, geology of excavations as applied to: quarrying, damsites and rock tunneling, hydrogeology, geomaterials and geohazards. Emphasis was placed on provision of labelled illustrations, as is expected for technical texts, including labelled images so as to fully benefit the reader. Evaluation aspects are addressed to test the learning process for the reader, as contained in exercises provided at the end of each chapter while considering competencies that were adduced at the beginning of each chapter as a new approach for authorship of educational material.
