Аннотация: Democratization in Nigeria, as in other African countries took a different dimension in the mid 1980s and at the beginning of the 1990s. This book not only examines the engagement of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the democratization process under both the military and civilian rule with deeper insights on the role of human rights NGOs in prodding the Nigerian state but also extensively and persuasively x-rayed the trajectories and changing patterns of their role over time. This book, which is based on some portions of a doctoral work by the author, has theoretically and empirically analyzed contexts, contestations, patterns, challenges and dynamics of CSOs engagements with the state and what can be done to strengthen their capacity. It is a compelling reading for academics, students, human rights activists, development experts, donor agencies, and anyone else interested in understanding the nature of the intricate tango between the state and civil society in Africa with special focus on Nigeria, a country that passed through the experience of egregious human rights violations under the military rule and civilian dictatorship.
