Female characters in Bharathi Mukherjee’s Wife.

Wife deals with the culture shock a timid Calcutta woman undergoes in New York. Dimple Dasgupta, a middle class girl tries to find herself, her identify, in the world of New York. Bharati Mukherjee viewed immigration as an opportunity to her to represent the experiences and at the same time lend her voice to her belief that it signified a release from constrictive social and cultural restraints back home. America is a country of immigrants, immigration being central of America. Every American who ever lives, with the exception of the native Indian, was neither an immigrant himself nor a descendant of immigrants. Though her characters are aware of the social oppression and the brutalities inflicted on the women characters yet they emerge as survivors who have successfully borne the brunt, both physical and emotional. Mukherjee, narrates her stories from a wide variety of perspectives, concentrating upon the concept of self within a large society. Wife truly adhere to the temperament and mood of the society.
