Аннотация: This book argues that the threat to the collective identity of the Ultras by the state forced the Ultras to politically react as a collective body toward the state. The work relies on four main questions in examining the changes in the nature of practices of the Ultras in light of it relation to the state: 1) Why did the ideas adapted by the Ultras find such wide appeal with the youth? 2) How did the state act in ways that drove the Ultras to radicalize and politicize their practices? 3) How did the Ultras groups interact with the new realities created by the Egyptian revolution? And finally, 4) What could be the future for political activism of the Ultras? This study concludes that the Ultras collective identity has been fundamentally affected by the groups increasing involvement in politics after the revolution of January 25, 2011. The revolution took the Ultras members out of the stadium, which made the groups adjust in the absence of the main factor that binds them-- performing the “tasks” assigned to them in conducting the activities inside the stadium. Consequently, the groups, especially Ultras Ahlawy, witnessed many internal divisions.
