This book presents the position of Indian woman as represented in the novels of Shashi Deshpande, who is a famous south Indian writer. She exhibits the quality of strength in a woman in the families as well as in the society.She has created ripples in the male dominated society by taking the female characters in a serious manner. Her attempt to exhibit the pain, suffering, fear, ambitions, ambiguity, argument, freedom of her protagonists is remarkable. She depicts the real woman and not the ideal. As a novelist she mirrors the new socio- cultural context of the process of change. They also reevaluate and reinterpret women’s status, helping them to reinvent their identity and community positions, norms and values. Her novels deal with the women of Indian womanhood who wish to be a wife, mother and daughter and at the same time feels to achieve her individuality.
