Building human security in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of Congo. The responsibility to protect civilians

      Аннотация: This book is an outcome of an intensive research in the field of Peace and Security. The Province of Ituri in the Democratic Republic of Congo is entangled in an infernal cycle of ethnic violence, particularly between Hema and Lendu ethnic groups for more than two decades. From 1996 till today, ethnic conflict has resulted in the displacement and death of thousands of people – many of them dying of the hacks of machetes and spears, mutilation and brutal rape, malnutrition and tropical disease, including Ebola.The book presents the results of a survey on the meaning of the words: “Peace and Security” as perceived by ordinary people in Ituri and places the debate in the context of the current human security discourse. The findings show that the meaning of peace and security depends on threats and the latter vary from place to place, and from the root causes of conflict. Building sustainable peace and security should therefore take into consideration a thorough analysis of the conflict and should involve stakeholders and decision-makers at local, national, regional or continental and international levels.
