The structure of the tongue favours a unique and complex bacterial biofilm, in which periodontal pathogens are frequently found. The most common location for mouth-related halitosis is the tongue. Tongue bacteria produce malodorous compounds and fatty acids, and account for 80 to 90% of all cases of mouth-related bad breath. Both tongue brushing and tongue scraping have been advocated as means of removing the Tongue coating.
