More than 90% of oral cancers are oral squamous cell carcinomas. Detection of oral cancer in its early stage dramatically affects survival rate when compared to detecting it in later stages. Malignant and benign lesions may not be clinically distinguishable, thus the clinician cannot predict the biological relevance of lesions. Though the gold standard, an oral biopsy is an invasive procedure. The oral cytology technique is a simple, nonaggressive, relatively painless technique tolerated well by patients. It can be used for diagnosis and identification of recurrent potentially malignant and malignant lesions. Conventional oral examination alone can lead to subjective interpretation. As a result, several adjunctive tools like vital staining and Light-based detection systems are used to detect malignant changes.
