Free Medical and Surgical Outreach Mission. An Effective Strategy in Organizing Free Medical and Surgical Outreach Mission in a Resource Poor Rural Community

      Аннотация: The formal healthcare system in Nigeria is near collapse and the National Health Insurance Scheme has failed to improve coverage. In this situation, a well-organized quality rural medical and surgical outreach program can augment the healthcare system.The objective of the project is to evolve an effective strategy for free medical and surgical outreach missions through collaboration between medical and surgical specialists with NGOs already involved in medical outreach missions. In that regard Mbano National Assembly United States of America (USA) Inc. (MNA) collaborated with International College of Surgeons (ICS) (The Nigerian National Section) to conduct a free medical and surgical outreach mission at Mbano Joint Hospital, from March 14 to 18, 2016. MNA USA Inc. funded the program and ICS (The Nigerian National Section) recruited the personnel and coordinated the program. The ICS fellows assisted in the conceptualization and design of a modern theatre for the base hospital and future missions. Some of the benefits included training and skill transfer to the young doctors and nurses; informed referral services and specialized service to the rural dwellers.
