A biomarker or biological marker is a substance that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biologic process, pathogenic process or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic intervention. An ideal diagnostic marker should indicate the presence of a disease process before extensive clinical damage has occurred. In the field of periodontology, traditional clinical criteria are often insufficient for determining sites of active disease, for monitoring the response to therapy or for measuring the degree of susceptibility to future disease progression. Biomarkers contribute knowledge about clinical pharmacology and provide a basis for the designing of clinical trials that expeditiously and definitively evaluate safety and efficacy.Researchers in the biotechnology and medical realm are currently investigating the use of oral fluids for the diagnosis of oral and systemic diseases and for drug development. The development of a wide spectrum of marker factors will be a primary goal of periodontal research.

ROLE OF BIOMARKERS IN PERIODONTAL DISEASES..
Biomarkers play a crucial role in the diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of periodontal diseases. Periodontal diseases are inflammatory conditions that affect the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. Biomarkers are measurable substances that can indicate the presence, severity, and...

Biomarkers In Periodontal Disease..
Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection characterized by persistent inflammation, connective tissue breakdown, and alveolar bone destruction. It has been a great challenge in periodontology to determine biomarkers for screening and predicting the early onset of disease (prognostic tests) or evaluating the disease activity and the...

Clinical implications of Biomarkers in Periodontal Disease. Salivary Biomarkers at Glance.
The earlier a disease is detected and diagnosed, the more likely it is that appropriate treatment will be administered, thus reducing the severity of the disease. Early detection is therefore vital for implementing effective clinical treatment. The transfer of diagnostic methods from laboratory to clinical use is increasingly used in the...

Biomarkers in periodontal disease. A roadmap.
Acute periodontitis is known as the 6th most common disease affecting more than 740 million people worldwide. The diagnosis of periodontal disease is highly dependent on the examination of normal clinical parameters. However, they symbolize the past, rather than the present, or the progression of the disease and the clinical condition, the...

BONE BIOMARKERS IN PERIODONTAL DISEASE..
Biomarkers have been classified by Perera and Weinstein based on the sequence of events from exposure to disease. Though biomarkers readily lend themselves to epidemiological investigations, they are also useful in the investigation of the natural history and prognosis of a disease. Biomarkers can also provide insight into disease progression,...

Bone Biomarkers in Periodontal Diseases..
A goal of periodontal diagnostic procedures is to provide useful information to the clinician regarding the present periodontal disease type, location, and severity. These findings serve as a basis for treatment planning and provide essential data during periodontal maintenance and disease-monitoring phases of treatment. Advances in oral and...

Biomarkers in Periodontal Disease. .
Periodontitis is a group of inflammatory diseases that affect the connective tissue attachment and supporting bone around the teeth whose initiation and progression depends on the presence of virulent microorganisms capable of causing disease. Periodontitis is considered to be a multi factorial disease with no clear cut etiology, so its...

Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition of the supporting tissues of the teeth. Intracellular enzymes are increasingly released from the damaged cells of periodontal tissues into the gingival crevicular fluid and saliva. It has been a great challenge to determine biomarkers for screening and predicting the early onset of disease (prognostic...
